Men

Wednesday Morning Men’s Meeting

We meet every week Wednesday morning from 10am, alternating each week between a bible study and a prayer meeting in the Church Lounge. Contact Derek Howard 01483 722414.

We join the coffee morning at Emmanuel Church on the first Wednesday of the month.

Men’s Games night

Would you like an opportunity to get to know other men at church? Would you like an easy invitation for a friend or neighbour to meet a few other Christian man? Do you know any of the 1/3 of men in the UK who report regularly feeling lonely?

The men’s games evening is a free, ‘youth group’ style drop-in for men, from 8-9:30pm on occasional Friday nights. Who knows how the Lord may use the friendships that develop?

Contact Peter with any questions. Arrive 15 mins early to help us set-up.

Men’s Curry

We get together occasionally for any guys wanting to meet have a chat, a beer and something to eat. It’s open to any male members of the congregation but won’t take up your whole evening.

In the church lounge – 7.30 for drinks and eating around  8pm.

A local curry shop or a brave member of the congregation will supply the food and we’ll get the beers (and some soft drinks). The aim is to have a good natter and a feed before a short talk about 8.50, maybe with some questions after and be done by 9.15. A £15 donation towards costs would be welcome.

Working Party

If you are handy at DIY or in the garden and have time on your hands the Men’s Working Party would like to hear from you.  They meet at 8.30am every Tuesday morning to maintain our church building and the church grounds.

For those who work during the week, we also have occasional Saturday working parties too.

Men’s Summer Book Group

Calling all men! Please join me this summer reading a good Christian book. You could take it on holiday with you for some spiritual refreshment.

What are we reading?

Hebrews 10:36 says “ You need to persevere”. Jesus highlights the reason: “the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.” (Matthew 24:13). And Paul offers the carrot: “if we endure, we will also reign with him.”

“Roots of Endurance” by John Piper is a collection of three short biographies of 18th-19th century evangelical Christians whose lives demonstrate invincible perseverance in the cause of the gospel and offer inspiration to us today. They are John Newton (slave-trader turned vicar, and writer of the hymn “Amazing Grace”), Charles Simeon (a preacher in Cambridge, whose ministry had a massive impact on the Church of England) and William Wilberforce (MP best known as an anti-slavery campaigner).

You want to? Great! What do you need to do??

Put Thursday 20th August in your diary. We’ll be discussing what we’ve read and how it’s encouraged us. “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another”. (contact me if that date doesn’t work – I might add a second option if it’s a problem for too many guys)

Readers who prefer paper: contact Peter Chamberlin (peter@stjohnswoking.uk) Send a message by Sunday 7th June and we’ll order a batch of books (£7.99 each). Speak to me if money’s a problem and we’ll sort it. After that date please order your own copy and you can certainly join the group.

E-book readers (Kindle, etc.) can get the book free at https://www.desiringgod.org/books/the-roots-of-endurance.

But reading isn’t my thing…

That’s okay – it’s not a long and difficult read. In recent years some men have joined us reading other books which were the first Christian books they’d ever read, and they loved it! So go on – give it a try!
